How is radioactive iodine biologically active, and what is the last word on the situation in Japan?

It seams that there hasn't been much reporting on this lately. Why not? Is the situation resolved? Did the production of Iodine 131 stop when the reactor stopped or are there people still getting exposed to this? If so, what are the biological consequences?
