How long does a dog's ear hematoma last?

My dog had this but I took her to the vet and they did surgery on her. They put a drain in her ear so that it would drain over the next couple days along with medication. After they took the drain out we still had to puncture her ear twice after that and let it drain. I would suggest putting a drain in for a week.
