Can anyone give me some research or facts on kidney failure in the elderly?

I have just found out today that my grandfather's kidneys may be failing and that he has the possibility of dieing. Hes only 59 but has diabetes type 2 I believe. Im just looking for anything about kindey failure that I could learn about. Is there any signs I could notice or anything that may show signs of his kidneys failing. Thanks for the help
